This is a very thorough interview by Greg Simmons of Audio Technology about how we recorded Fiona Joy Hawkins (piano and voice) and Rebecca Daniel (violin and voice) for the album Heavenly Voices. Thank you to everyone involved!
There are thousands of approaches to recording these days and the lost art of recording two performers live is one of the most challenging situations you can image. I've recorded wonderful large big bands with 20 or more people, string quartets, jazz ensembles, pop bands with thousands of overdubs but often the most difficult are two people in the room with no headphones or overdubs... they just listen to each other and play. My job is to capture the sounds as best I can.
It's not often that an interview goes this well. It was fortunate that Greg had the background of recording live performances and knew the challenges (and questions) to ask. If you love details, this will be a great read for you! Here's the article and if you get to the end of it there may be a surprise.

Fiona, Becky and myself are so proud of this recording and thrilled that others have taken notice. The good news is we've found more unreleased tracks and are planning to release them later this year.
Thanks again to all involved...
Fiona Joy Hawkins, Rebecca Daniel, Marshall Cullen (Foghorn Records), AudioTechnology and most of all for Greg who spent an enormous amount of time to get the details.
Have a great weekend, all!
