#49 What's the hubbub about expensive cable?
Those of us who have wandered around the audiophile forums know the battles between formats (can anyone hear the difference?) and expensive cables (can anyone hear the difference?). Yes, we can hear the difference and we do blindfold tests often.
We have always felt that if one person can accurately hear the difference in formats and cables, then there is a difference. The majority of people may not care, but those that do should not be told it's impossible. Now, the majority of people may not hear a difference and those that can, may not care. That's all fine with us.. but the question is "Can anyone hear the difference?" Yes, we can. This isn't about better or worse, it's about hearing the difference.
Since the day we entered the download business (in 2008), it was our mission to provide the best quality possible while catering to the demands of our music lovers who have a variety of opinions and desires (which is why we offer 9 formats for listening). If it makes financial sense, we'll fill those format desires.
Before we became a record label, we were exploring the cable business. We had found that pro audio studios had limits on cable choices. Mogami was top of the line for pros. It's very good, but when compared to what's available to high end consumers, pro audio seriously lacked a high end cable 15 years ago. We developed a cable in house that we were using in our studio and were going to sell it to pros. We still use it in our studio now. Along the way we were sidetracked.
In March 2007, we made a decision to give our first album, Blue Coast Collection 1, a fair shake at release and headed to the Paris audiophile show. The reception of our album was overwhelming. We stopped pursuing cable development and became a record label. Thirteen years and 50 albums later, plus a DSD download store and an impending big announcement, many of the cable manufacturers have become dear friends. They are doing a terrific job with outstanding cable of all kinds.
Yes, cable makes a difference. Yes, we buy it or beg for it. Do you have to buy it? Only if you want to.
We have a saying around here for our interns.... "if you can't wrap the hose, do you think we're going to let you wrap our cables?" We care about our cables here. :)
Have a wonderful day!
