We first met Garett by chance singing at a friend's birthday party in Portland. At the time, Jean Claude Reynaud and myself were working on a new recording technique which later became Extended Sound Environment or E.S.E.
We weren't really looking for new artists for our recordings, but Garett was magnetic and part of a new generation that we felt deserved more attention. So we invited him to the first E.S.E. sessions that later became the Blue Coast Collection 1.
It was Garett's first recording session. He traveled to California to be with us at The Site where the recordings took place. E.S.E., a technique that requires an artist perform without headphones or overdubs was perfect for Garett who exudes personality with everything he does. Two of his songs made it to the first Collection.
Garett was so thrilled with this style of recording that he had us travel to a cabin in Utah were we recorded Little Cottonwood in the same E.S.E. style. These recordings are so natural that you can hear the river running on the right side of the recording. At one point, a thunderstorm came through and you hear the clap of the thunder. E.S.E. is all of that.. the natural passion in a performance and all the surrounding things that could happen and do.
Enjoy Garett's music!
