#76 In our lifetime, did you ever think this would happen?
#76 In our lifetime, did you ever think this would happen?
No, not the pandemic, a siege on the Capitol Building incited by the sitting President of the United States. Wow. If in any way you agreed with what happened at the Capitol Building this week, please stop reading now and go to another website. But, if you're like most people in the USA and the world who were horrified at what was going on, you might need healing and unity as so many of us do.
Incitement of insurrection, sedition, fomenting, 25th Amendment -- terms I didn't know and had never heard before -- all added to my vocabulary. The sitting President of the United States asking for a take over of the Capitol Building. The enemy within. This could top 9/11 and a worldwide pandemic as "we never would have thought in our lifetime."
Mads Tolling, a wonderful violinist, put together a video using music he had recorded with us for Blue Coast Records on the day before the pandemic lockdown. John R. Burr was on the piano. On that day last March 2020, we heard the news. Mads, John, Patrick and myself, together in the studio. We looked at each other as if it might be the last time we would record. This piece of music, “Ashokan Farewell,” is what we recorded. It was used in Ken Burns' documentary on the Civil War. It was so beautifully performed by Mads and John that we released it on the Mostly Piano compilation because we weren't sure if we would ever be able to record together again. (I'm happy to say that we did get together in August 2020 and finished the album).
Using images from the rioting and attempted takeover, Mads added “Ashokan Farewell” as the soundtrack. Appropriate, being there was a civil war taking place at the Capitol. You might have seen these photos already, but if not, please know that we do not condone any of these violent and treasonist acts. Know that these images could be upsetting. To see our elected officials on the floor makes us all wonder, "what if..." You know the rest.
And now I need to calm the nerves of my 86 year old mother, 92 year old father, retired fireman brother, and ease our minds with friends, family, and strangers as we get ready for a new beginning.
If you have a need to express your feelings, please write to us directly.
If you want your own soundtrack for the news, the song is available in all formats on Mostly Piano.
